NEW PROGRAM "GENERATION X" ANSWERS CROSSBREEDING QUESTIONS
Fort Atkinson, WI

Dairymen considering crossbreeding have questions regarding breeds, second and third Generation crosses and what best fits my herd?   GENERATION X is a New Crossbreeding Program developed by New Generation Genetics to answer all these questions and provide options to fit any producers breeding goals.

According to New Generation President Dan Gilbert, the program was designed to both answer the basic questions, and give options to the broad scope of dairymen who are considering crossbreeding.

“We saw a need for a straight forward crossbreeding program which deals with the basic questions and issues dairymen have when considering crossbreeding.  GENERATION X does just that” Gilbert said.  The unique program gives dairymen three options, depending on their breeding goals, milk market and environment.  Gilbert also commented, “We feel this makes the decision of what breed(s) to use quite simple.  They simply need to answer what traits are most important to their operation, and pick the option that fits”.  An interesting component of one option is letting the cow dictate the breed to use.

The three program options are listed below:

CROSS, EVALUATE, CROSS- is an option developed in which the cow dictates the breed to cross with. When crossing a Holsteins x a top Brown Swiss sire the resulting offspring is evaluated by the dairymen. If the animal exhibits more Brown Swiss characteristics then use a Holstein bull and if the animal exhibits more Holstein characteristics use a top Brown Swiss bull. This option is designed for dairy producers wanting to maximize milk yield and components, while drastically improving fertility, SCS, disease resistance and longevity.

CROSS, CROSS, CROSS (3 breed rotation) - is an option developed to maintain the highest level of hybrid vigour. The first step is to cross a Holstein cow with a top Brown Swiss bull, the resulting offspring is then bred to a third breed of the dairymen’s choosing. This option is designed for dairymen concerned about the size of their animals and those wishing to maximize heterosis.

PURE CROSS- This option is for dairymen who want to capitalize on the many advantages of Brown Swiss. A Holstein is bred to a top Brown Swiss bull and the resulting offspring are continually bred to top Brown Swiss bulls. In the 4th generation the dairymen would now own a fully registered Brown Swiss cow. He then can enjoy all the benefits of owning high genetic value purebred Brown Swiss cattle.

“Besides answering the main crossbreeding questions, GENERATION X stresses high quality genetics, and draws on the successes of dairymen the world-over”, added Gilbert.
